Indirect Wealth(偏財)

Indirect Wealth (Pyeonjae, 偏財) is the Ten God assigned to heavenly stems and earthly branches whose element your Day Master controls (剋), or governs, and whose yin-yang polarity matches yours.

In plain terms, it means “money moving in and out in large amounts”. Its position points to money flowing beyond a fixed salary and resources managed on a broader scale.

Traits

The table shows 1 Indirect Wealth stem and 1 or 2 branches for each Day Master. Here is the rule — the element you control (Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, and Metal controls Wood) is Wealth (Jaeseong, 財星). Within it, matching yin-yang polarity makes it Indirect Wealth; opposite polarity makes it Direct Wealth. A Gap Wood (甲) Day Master controls Earth, so Mu Earth (戊) is Indirect Wealth. Among the branches, Jin (辰) and Sul (戌) are Indirect Wealth because their main hidden stem is Mu Earth. There are 4 Earth branches, so only Wood Day Masters, which control Earth, have 2 Indirect Wealth branches.

The Wealth group receives the “Expenditure” color in the 4-level relationship scale because earning money takes effort. That is why Seowoon places people who represent Wealth in the “Wealth Supporter” role on the Supporter Map — someone labeled as an expenditure can be a supporter when it comes to money. Indirect Wealth represents the less conventional side (偏): money moving in and out in large amounts rather than a fixed salary. It is associated with business·trade·investment·managing money for multiple people.

Indirect Wealth in the year pillar is associated with family assets or a father — traditional saju assigns Indirect Wealth the father's role. In the month pillar, it is read as handling money on a large scale in your working life. In the day branch, it places wealth in the partner seat; in the hour pillar, it is associated with money later in life and money managed by children. Traditional saju associates Wealth with the spouse in a man's chart, linking Indirect Wealth in the day branch to the partner seat.

If Indirect Wealth appears 2 or more times, it is read as money coming in and going out in large amounts. If the Peer group is strong, the reading also considers the principle of multiple peers competing for wealth, suggesting more people sharing those resources. No Indirect Wealth does not mean no money. It may point toward steady income through Direct Wealth instead. If Wealth is entirely absent, the reading looks to ten-year cycles for a period that supports managing resources.

In Seowoon's free “Ten Gods Structure” reading, check the strength of the Wealth group and the pillars containing Indirect Wealth. If Wealth is 0, it remains a dotted line; another group is not substituted for it.

A common misconception

You may hear “Indirect Wealth = an entrepreneur's chart” or “Indirect Wealth means someone is unfaithful”. But Indirect Wealth describes how money moves, not a career or romantic behavior. The latter claim comes from an old convention that associates Indirect Wealth in a man's chart with a lover. That convention is simply a classification that assigns the spouse to Direct Wealth and other Wealth relationships to Indirect Wealth.A calculation showing Indirect Wealth does not determine how someone behaves.

Frequently asked questions

How do Indirect Wealth and Direct Wealth differ?

Both belong to the element your Day Master controls. The same yin-yang polarity makes it Indirect Wealth; the opposite polarity makes it Direct Wealth. Indirect Wealth represents money coming and going in large amounts, while Direct Wealth represents steady income. For a Gap Wood Day Master, Mu Earth (戊) is Indirect Wealth and Gi Earth (己) is Direct Wealth.

Does having a lot of Indirect Wealth mean I earn a lot?

In saju, it suggests money moving in large amounts, not necessarily accumulating. When Wealth is strongly represented, we also look at whether your own strength—your Day Master and Peer group—can handle it. Seowoon calculates how many Wealth characters you have and where they appear. How much you earn is beyond that calculation.

What careers suit Indirect Wealth?

It is commonly associated with work where money circulates widely, such as business, sales, distribution, investing, and trade. But Wealth alone does not determine a career. We also look at how it connects with Output, which creates things, and Officer, which follows rules.
