Indirect Resource(偏印)

Indirect Resource (Pyeonin, 偏印) is the Ten God assigned to heavenly stems and earthly branches whose element nourishes (生) your Day Master and shares its yin or yang polarity. It shares an element with Direct Resource; polarity distinguishes the two.

In plain English, it means “unusual learning”. Its positions are read as showing where you find nourishment beyond established paths — skills learned outside school, intuition, religion, or unconventional knowledge.

Traits

The table shows the heavenly stems and earthly branches that count as Indirect Resource for each Day Master. The element that generates yours is Resource; within it, characters with the same yin or yang polarity as you are Indirect Resource. For a Gap Wood (甲) Day Master, Water generates Wood, so yang Water, Im (壬), is Indirect Resource. Among the branches, Hae (亥) is Indirect Resource because its main hidden stem is Im Water. Hae (亥) is a yin branch, but its main hidden stem, Im Water, is yang. Going by the branch's polarity would incorrectly identify it as Direct Resource. For an Eul Wood (乙) Day Master, Gye Water (癸) and Ja (子) are Indirect Resource instead.

In the four relationship tiers, Resource receives the “Benefactor” color because it replenishes you without requiring effort on your part. Indirect Resource is its unconventional side (偏), traditionally associated with learning outside formal channels — hands-on skills, intuition, and knowledge explored independently, such as religion·divination·art. Its old name, “overturning the bowl” (Dosik, 倒食), comes from the Five Elements relationship in which Indirect Resource controls Eating God. This led to the saying that support can suppress productive effort and overturn your rice bowl.

Indirect Resource in the year pillar is read as unusual knowledge inherited from family or a connection to grandparents. In the month pillar, it suggests finding your place through knowledge beyond formal skills and credentials; in the month branch, it is called an Indirect Resource structure. In the day branch, it suggests a partner who supports you in an unconventional way. In the hour pillar, it relates to children and studies you pursue deeply later in life.

Two or more Indirect Resource characters are traditionally read as strong receiving energy, with more thought and less room for action through Eating God. If Indirect Wealth is also present, it is seen as checking Indirect Resource and restoring balance, a relationship called Wealth controlling Resource. No Indirect Resource means this particular channel for unconventional learning is absent from the natal chart, not that you lack talent. Direct Resource may fill that role instead.

In “Ten Gods Structure” in Seowoon's free Ten Gods reading, you can check the strength of your Resource group and which pillars contain Indirect Resource. On the Benefactor Map, a person who represents Resource appears as a “Growth Benefactor”. Indirect Resource is marked as the unconventional side of that same role.

A common misconception

You may hear “Indirect Resource means you're perceptive and suspicious” or “Indirect Resource means someone will take your livelihood”. But the calculation only counts and locates characters that generate your element and share your yin or yang polarity. The name “overturning the bowl” (Dosik, 倒食) comes from the Five Elements rule that Indirect Resource controls Eating God, and that rule describes a pattern where Eating God is also present.Without Eating God, there is no bowl to overturn. When Seven Killings is strong, Indirect Resource can play a helpful role by receiving and channeling that force.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to have a lot of Indirect Resource?

Traditionally, it means receiving energy is strong, so thought can get ahead of action and suppress productive energy, represented by Eating God. Indirect Wealth is seen as checking Indirect Resource to restore balance, while Seven Killings gives it force to receive and channel. The amount can be calculated; whether it becomes talent or suspicion cannot.

How are Indirect Resource and Direct Resource different?

Both belong to the element that generates yours. The same yin or yang polarity makes it Indirect Resource; the opposite makes it Direct Resource. Direct Resource is associated with formal learning through school·credentials·documents, while Indirect Resource points to unconventional learning through skills·intuition·specialized knowledge. For a Gap Wood Day Master, Im Water (壬) is Indirect Resource and Gye Water (癸) is Direct Resource.

What careers suit Indirect Resource?

It is commonly associated with work that draws on depth of expertise more than formal degrees, such as technical trades, research, divination·religion, art, and specialized medical skills. When Indirect Resource suppresses Eating God, the pattern is read as favoring work that receives and processes things over work that creates them. One Ten God alone does not determine your career.
