Direct Resource(正印)

Direct Resource (正印) is one of the Ten Gods. It describes a heavenly stem or earthly branch whose element generates (生) your Day Master and whose yin-yang polarity is opposite to yours.

In plain English, it means “supportive learning”. Its position in your chart is read as a channel for support from mothers · teachers · scholarship · certifications · documents.

How it is set

Branches are classified by their main hidden stem. For Ja (子) · O (午) · Sa (巳) · Hae (亥), the branch and its main hidden stem have different yin-yang polarities.

Traits

The rule has two steps. First, check the elemental relationship — Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood. The element that generates yours is Resource (印星). Next, check yin and yang — opposite polarity means Direct Resource; matching polarity means Indirect Resource. In the table, Gye Water (癸) is Direct Resource for a Gap Wood (甲) Day Master. Earthly branches are classified by their primary hidden stem, making Ja (子) Direct Resource as well. Seowoon uses only the primary hidden stem to classify each branch; some schools also count its other hidden stems.

The Resource group (Direct Resource · Indirect Resource) uses the “benefactor” color in Seowoon's 4-part relationship system, because it represents support that reaches you without your having to strive for it. Within this group, Direct Resource is “direct (正)”: learning through established channels such as schools · qualifications · official documents · endorsement from a senior figure. In traditional saju theory, strong receiving energy suggests familiarity with learning and relying on support; weaker receiving energy suggests having to provide more for yourself.

The interpretation varies by position. Direct Resource in the year pillar is associated with learning inherited from family · ancestors; in the month pillar, it suggests establishing yourself through parents, society, documents · qualifications. In the day branch, it suggests a supportive partner seat; in the hour pillar, learning through children or later in life. Direct Resource in the month branch is known as a Direct Resource structure.

A common interpretation is that 2 or more Direct Resource placements can make receiving feel familiar while holding back the energy of creating and expressing (Output). Having none is read as needing to seek learning for yourself. But the count describes a structure, not a personality score. Seowoon's calculations establish only how many placements there are and which pillars contain them.

Seowoon's free “Ten Gods Structure” reading assigns a Ten God to each of the eight characters and shows the relative strength of the five groups. You can see which pillars contain Direct Resource and how strongly the Resource group is represented.

A common misconception

People often equate “Direct Resource = being good at school”, but it describes a channel for support, not test scores. Many people study successfully without it, and even with 3 placements, unused support can become dependence. The calculation tells us only 'where the characters that generate my element appear, and how many there are'. Whether someone is a scholar lies beyond that calculation.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to have a lot of Direct Resource?

Traditional saju theory reads it as strong receiving energy, familiarity with relying on support, and possible restraint on creative expression (Output). Wealth appearing alongside it is thought to temper that energy and restore balance. The amount can be calculated; how it shows up differs from person to person.

Is Direct Resource read differently in women's and men's charts?

The rules for assigning the Ten Gods do not change by gender. Direct Resource is associated with mothers · learning in both men's and women's charts. The difference lies only in which group represents a partner — traditional saju theory uses Wealth for men and Officer for women. Identifying Direct Resource does not determine marriage or personality.

What careers are associated with Direct Resource?

Traditional saju theory commonly connects it with work involving learning · documents · qualifications — education, research, administration, and credentialed professions. But one Ten God does not determine a career. Output, which creates, and Officer, which brings rules and responsibility, must also be considered together. Direct Resource alone cannot tell you what career to choose.
