The Needle Star (Hyeonchim-sal, 懸針殺) is a symbolic star identified when at least two of the eight characters in your chart are the needle-shaped characters Gap (甲)·Sin (辛)·Myo (卯)·O (午)·Mi (未).
Its presence is read as precision in speech and skilled hands. Its absence suggests less of that sharp edge, not a lack of ability.
How it is set
Character
---
Gap (甲)
Sin (辛)
Myo (卯)
O (午)
Mi (未)
This star appears when at least two of these characters occur among the eight birth-chart characters (six if your birth time is unknown). Some schools also count Sin (申) · Yu (酉).
Traits
The table lists five characters that count toward the Needle Star. This method counts characters rather than checking specific positions, so each counts regardless of its pillar or whether it is a stem or branch. If your birth time is unknown, only six characters are counted. Seowoon uses these five; some schools also include Sin (申)·Yu (酉), bringing the total to seven.
In plain terms, these are “sharp-edged characters”. The name comes from their shapes, which resemble needles pointing straight down. Saju tradition associates them with precise speech, delicate handiwork, and impressions that linger once they take hold. That is why work involving acupuncture needles·sewing needles·knives·pens is often associated with this star.
The reading depends on which pillars hold these characters. In the day pillar, they suggest a sharp edge in your own words and your partner seat. In the month pillar, that edge appears in work and social relationships; in the year pillar, family; in the hour pillar, younger people and later life. If your Day Master is Gap (甲) or Sin (辛), you already start with one qualifying character.
Three or more suggest a sharper edge; two qualify, but with a subtler expression. One alone does not qualify as a Needle Star. More people lack this star than have it, so its absence is not a missing piece.
Below the twelve position-based stars, Seowoon’s free symbolic star (sal, 煞) reading separately lists five “Stars Read by Pillar and Character”. If you have the Needle Star, it shows which characters qualify and how many there are. Each entry also states the five-character rule Seowoon uses.
A common misconception
You may hear claims like “Needle Star = hurtful words that cut people” or “Having the Needle Star means you will have surgery”, but the calculation only counts five specific characters. That same sharpness can become precision in medicine·beauty services·cooking·writing. The next question is where you put it to use; a character count does not define a person.
