Commanding Star(魁罡殺)

The Commanding Star (Goegang-sal, 魁罡殺) is a symbolic star identified when your birth day’s stem-branch pair, or day pillar, is one of six: Gyeong-jin (庚辰)·Gyeong-sul (庚戌)·Im-jin (壬辰)·Im-sul (壬戌)·Mu-jin (戊辰)·Mu-sul (戊戌).

Its presence is read as quick decisiveness and a tendency to take on major responsibilities, then make equally decisive withdrawals. The same stem-branch pair in another pillar does not count; it must be your day pillar.

How it is set

Commanding Star — day pillars that mark the Commanding Star (Seowoon’s method: 6 combinations)
Day Pillar
Gyeong (庚)-jin (辰)
Gyeong (庚)-sul (戌)
Im (壬)-jin (辰)
Im (壬)-sul (戌)
Mu (戊)-jin (辰)
Mu (戊)-sul (戌)

Only the stem-branch pair of your birth day (day pillar) counts. Some schools exclude Mu-jin (戊辰) and count five combinations — Seowoon counts six.

Traits

The table lists six day pillars that qualify as Goegang. Unlike the twelve symbolic stars, which are assigned by position, Goegang depends only on the two characters of the day pillar. The same stem-branch pair in the year · month · hour pillar does not count. Seowoon counts six, including Mu-jin (戊辰), though some schools exclude Mu-jin and count five.

In plain English, it is “a position with a weighty name”. Goe (魁) and Gang (罡) refer to the first and last stars of the Big Dipper, giving the name a grand presence. In saju, these day pillars are traditionally read as especially strong, suggesting quick decisions, a powerful drive, and pronounced ups and downs. Readings of sharp intelligence and strong stubbornness come from the same root.

Because this star applies only to the day pillar, its position is always the same — you and your partner seat. Goegang is therefore read for both your own tendencies and your partner's. Its day branch is Jin (辰) or Sul (戌), so the partner seat is also an Earth (土) storehouse. The surrounding Ten Gods help indicate whether that weight falls more on work or relationships.

You have only one day pillar, so you cannot have more than one Goegang. If you do not have it, your day pillar is simply one of the other 54 out of 60. It does not mean you lack decisiveness. Im-sul · Mu-jin also qualify for the White Tiger Star, so both stars can appear together.

Seowoon's free symbolic star (sal, 煞) reading lists five “stars identified by pillars and characters” below the twelve position-based stars. If you have Goegang, it shows the two characters of your day pillar and explains Seowoon's choice to count six qualifying pairs.

A common misconception

Claims like “Women with Goegang have a difficult fate” and “Goegang means no luck with husbands” have circulated for years, but the calculation only checks whether the day pillar is one of six pairs.Older texts treated Goegang in women harshly because they came from a time when women were discouraged from taking the lead. Today, the same position is read as decisiveness and drive. The reading asks where to direct that strength, rather than treating it as a harmful star to suppress.

Frequently asked questions

How is Goegang read for women?

The rule is the same, and the table does not change by gender. Older texts' harsher view of Goegang in women reflects their era, not a different calculation. Seowoon uses the same table for everyone and reads it the same way: quick decisions and pronounced ups and downs.

What careers suit someone with Goegang?

It is often associated with work that calls for decisive action and significant responsibility, such as the military · policing · law · medicine · management · sports. This does not mean you must choose one of these careers. The idea is that these traits can shine when you have meaningful responsibility.

Are there 5 or 6 Goegang types?

It depends on the school. All schools include Gyeong-jin · Gyeong-sul · Im-jin · Im-sul · Mu-sul. They differ on whether to include Mu-jin (戊辰). Seowoon counts six, including Mu-jin, as shown in the table above.
