The balancing element (Yongsin, 用神) is the energy your chart calls for to find balance. Like turning on the heat in a cold room, a chart leaning one way seeks support from the other.
Seowoon keeps candidates from two approaches: balancing the Day Master's strength and balancing the temperature of your birth season. Since schools of saju use different methods, we do not declare one definitive balancing element.
How it is set
| Basis | Naming basis |
|---|---|
| Strength balancing · strong Day Master | Output·Wealth·Officer |
| Strength balancing · weak Day Master | Resource·Peer |
| Seasonal balancing · Sa, O, and Mi months | Water (水) |
| Seasonal balancing · Hae, Ja, and Chuk months | Fire (火) |
| Seasonal balancing · spring·fall | Not assigned by season alone |
| Not assessed | One definitive favorable element, helpful·unhelpful elements, corrective·mediating·following patterns |
If Day Master strength is undetermined, no balancing candidates are suggested.
Traits
Strength balancing starts with assessing whether the Day Master is strong or weak. Passing at least two of three checks indicates a strong Day Master, calling for groups that release or reduce energy: Output · Wealth · Officer. A weak Day Master calls for groups that add support: Resource · Peer. Translating these groups into elements relative to the Day Master gives us candidate elements. If an unknown birth time leaves strength unassessed, we do not generate strength-balancing candidates — we do not build candidates on a missing assessment.
Seasonal balancing looks only at your birth month's earthly branch. The months of Sa · O · Mi (summer) call for Water (水), while Hae · Ja · Chuk (winter) call for Fire (火). For spring and fall, season alone does not determine a balancing element. This is a simplified rule, and we label it as such rather than imply we calculate full seasonal tables for every Day Master. When both approaches point to the same element, we mark it as supported by both.
In general, a balancing element is understood as something you encounter through work and people, rather than objects. A Wealth candidate suggests balance through activities involving money and practical returns; a Resource candidate points to settings where you learn and receive support. If the candidate group already appears in your birth chart, bring what you have to the forefront. If it is absent, it represents energy to seek outside yourself.
Seowoon does not calculate supporting, obstructing, or counteracting elements, remedy-based or mediating balancing elements, or balancing elements for follow-type charts. Naming one character as though we had calculated all of these would present one school's answer as universal. Keeping multiple candidates may seem less helpful, but it is more honest.
The “Balancing Element” section of Seowoon's free reading shows strength-balancing and seasonal-balancing candidates separately. It also identifies elements supported by both approaches and counts how many positions their groups occupy in your birth chart.
A common misconception
Advice like “Your balancing element is Wood, so wear green” or “Move east” turns the balancing element into a prescription for objects. In saju, it describes the direction of energy a chart calls for, not a lookup table for colors · directions · name characters. Many services name a single balancing element, but schools differ. It is common to receive three different answers from three different readers.

Frequently asked questions
How do you find the balancing element?
First, assess whether the Day Master is strong or weak. For a strong Day Master, consider groups that reduce energy: Output · Wealth · Officer. For a weak one, consider groups that add support: Resource · Peer. Then add Water as a seasonal candidate for a summer birth, or Fire for a winter birth. An element shared by both approaches takes priority.
What if my balancing element is missing from my chart?
It means the energy your chart calls for is not present within it, so it is interpreted as something to encounter through people and experiences. It does not mean you have a bad chart. Ten-year and annual cycles that bring that element are read as times when this energy becomes available.
How is the balancing element different from the supporting element?
The supporting element helps the balancing element, while the obstructing element works against it. Seowoon calculates balancing-element candidates only, without assigning supporting or obstructing elements. Doing so would require choosing one school's rules.
