Day Master strength (singang-sinyak, 身強身弱) classifies your Day Master, which represents you, as strong or weak based on how much support it receives from the other seven characters in your chart.
Strong does not mean good, and weak does not mean bad. The distinction is whether your chart works better by putting its energy to use or by receiving more support. It is the starting point for identifying your favorable element.
How it is set
| Check | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Seasonal support | The month branch's main hidden stem falls in the Peer or Resource group |
| Root support | A known branch has a hidden stem of the same element as the Day Master |
| Overall support | Peers and Resources make up more than half of the stems other than the Day Master and the branches' main hidden stems |
| Assessment | Two or more checks passed means a strong Day Master; one or fewer means a weak Day Master |
| Birth time unknown | Leave the assessment open |
The number of checks passed measures neither physical strength nor probability. It guides where to look for your favorable element.
Traits
Seowoon uses three checks. First, seasonal support: does the main hidden stem of your birth month's branch belong to the Peer or Resource group? Second, roots: does any hidden stem in the known branches share your Day Master's element? Third, supporting majority: do Peer and Resource make up more than half of the other heavenly stems and each branch's main hidden stem? Passing at least two means a strong Day Master; passing one or none means a weak one. This rule is called seowoongwan-three-gates-v1.
If your birth time is unknown, we do not make a final classification. Missing the hour pillar's two characters changes the denominator for the supporting-majority check and could reverse the result. Seowoon shows which way the known positions lean and marks the classification as pending. This calculation never fills gaps with guesses.
In general, a strong Day Master already has enough support, so its chart benefits from channeling energy outward through Output·Wealth·Officer. A weak Day Master lacks support, so its chart benefits from building a foundation through Resource·Peer. A weak Day Master does not mean a weak person — receiving help is how that chart naturally works.
Schools use different methods. Some score and total the hidden stems, some weight the month branch by the number of days a stem governs the season (saryeong, 司令), and others first check for elemental transformations or following structures. Seowoon does not use those weights; it simply counts how many of the three checks pass. That count does not measure physical strength or probability.
Seowoon's free “Strong·Weak Day Master” reading walks through the three checks, showing how many you pass and which positions support you.
A common misconception
Saying “a strong Day Master means a good chart” is only partly true. With so much support, a strong Day Master can lean toward carrying everything alone. For a weak Day Master, building reliable support can itself become a strength. In saju, Day Master strength is not a grade. It guides where to look for your favorable element. The calculation also does not establish whether you have a strong or gentle personality.

Frequently asked questions
How is Day Master strength determined?
We check seasonal support·roots·supporting majority: whether your birth season supports you, whether your own element is rooted in the branches, and whether more than half of the other positions support you. Passing at least two means a strong Day Master. The free reading walks through all three.
Is a weak Day Master bad?
No. It means the chart needs more support, making Resource·Peer candidates for favorable influences. Weak Day Masters are common in saju, and traditional readings often suggest that working with your chart's structure can bring better results than simply having a strong Day Master.
Can I determine my Day Master's strength without my birth time?
Not definitively. Without the hour pillar's two characters, the denominator for the supporting-majority check changes, which could reverse the result. Seowoon shows which way the known positions lean and what kind of hour pillar would reverse it, while leaving the classification pending.
