Capping(冠帶)

Capping (Gwandae, 冠帶) is the 3rd of the 12 life stages. It represents young adulthood, when a person puts on an adult's hat (冠) and sash (帶) and steps into the world.

As strength builds, so does the desire to make yourself known. This stage combines confidence·pride·a willingness to take on challenges with youthful energy that is still unrefined.

What Capping means

Capping comes just before the rise into Prosperity·Peak. Strength is already present, but experience is still limited, so the urge to step forward may outpace actual ability.

Traditional readings associate Capping with a concern for social standing and honor. In the day branch, it generally describes you and your relationship with a spouse; in the month branch, your work and social life; and in the hour branch, your later years and what your efforts yield.

Which branch places each Day Master in Capping?

In Seowoon's engine table, each Day Master reaches Capping at the following branch: Gap (甲) at Chuk (丑), Eul (乙) at Jin (辰), Byeong (丙) at Jin (辰), Jeong (丁) at Mi (未), Mu (戊) at Jin (辰), Gi (己) at Mi (未), Gyeong (庚) at Mi (未), Sin (辛) at Sul (戌), Im (壬) at Sul (戌), and Gye (癸) at Chuk (丑). Yang stems (Gap·Byeong·Mu·Gyeong·Im) move forward through the branches, while yin stems (Eul·Jeong·Gi·Sin·Gye) move backward. Mu Earth follows the same positions as Byeong Fire, and Gi Earth follows Jeong Fire (the shared Fire–Earth method).

Schools that do not reverse the order for yin stems assign different positions to yin Day Masters. Check this methodological difference first when comparing results from other sources.

Key traits

This stage suggests strong pride and the drive to pursue goals. It is generally associated with being comfortable taking the lead and finding strength in competition.

Capping in the day branch suggests that neither spouse likes to give in. In the month branch, it suggests a drive to establish yourself early in society.

When it shows up positively

This stage is associated with building skills through challenges and competition, and finding opportunities by making a name for yourself. It suggests standing out early in your field.

What to watch for

Excessive pride may make it hard to accept advice or lead to frequent arguments. A common suggestion is to allow time to gain experience, so rushing ahead does not leave you without a solid foundation.

Careers and Natural Aptitudes

This stage is considered well suited to competitive fields (sales·sports·law·politics), work built on your own reputation (professional practice·freelancing), and leadership roles within organizations.

Love and relationships

In love, this suggests a confident, proactive approach. A common suggestion is to leave room for compromise so that wanting to win does not turn into conflict with your partner.

Health

Because Capping represents rising youthful energy, traditional readings advise care with demanding schedules and overwork.

Health readings based on the 12 life stages are traditional metaphors for phases of energy, not diagnoses. Have any physical symptoms assessed medically.

A common misconception

You may hear that “Capping is bad because it makes you stubborn”, but this stage describes growing strength as you enter society. With maturity, that pride can become leadership. For someone whose chart is weak overall, Capping may provide the strength to hold steady.

Frequently asked questions

Is Capping a favorable stage?

As a rising phase of energy, it is seen as giving strength to new challenges. If the chart is already strong, however, it may tip into excess, so the chart's overall strength matters.

What is good to do during a Capping ten-year period?

It is generally read as a time to demonstrate your abilities and step into competition. The Ten God associated with that ten-year period helps identify the specific area.

How do Capping and Prosperity differ?

Capping represents a young adult just entering society. Prosperity represents an established adult with a position and a salary. Prosperity follows Capping.
