Resentment Star(怨嗔殺)

The Resentment Star (Wonjin-sal, 怨嗔殺) forms when the earthly branches in two of the four pillars make one of these pairs: Ja–Mi (子未) · Chuk–O (丑午) · In–Yu (寅酉) · Myo–Sin (卯申) · Jin–Hae (辰亥) · Sa–Sul (巳戌). In plain English, it is a pair that grates for no clear reason.

In a chart, it is read as a hard-to-explain sense of distance between those two positions. The calculation only identifies the pair; it does not determine good or bad fortune.

How it is set

Ja (子)Mi (未)
Chuk (丑)O (午)
In (寅)Yu (酉)
Myo (卯)Sin (申)
Jin (辰)Hae (亥)

Resentment forms when the branches of any two pillars match one of these pairs. We identify the pair without judging it as favorable or unfavorable.

Traits

The table lists six earthly-branch pairs that qualify for Resentment. This method checks pairs rather than assigning stars by position. Unlike the Ghost Gate Star, it also counts pillars that are not next to each other. Any two of the four pillars qualify if their branches form one of these pairs. Schools largely agree on the six pairs, so Seowoon uses the traditional list.

In plain terms, this is “a pair that feels uneasy for no clear reason”. Won (怨) means resentment, and jin (嗔) means anger. The name sounds heavy, but in saju, it describes a relationship that neither clashes sharply nor fits comfortably. While a head-on clash makes noise, Resentment is generally read as a quiet distance that lingers.

The reading depends on which two pillars form the pair. Year-month points to distance between family life and social life, month-day between work and yourself, day-hour between yourself and children · later life, and year-day between family and your partner. Pairs involving the day branch come up most often in compatibility readings because they include the partner seat.

If there are two pairs, there are two areas where distance may arise, and each is read separately. If there are none, there are none; the absence of Resentment does not mean every relationship will run smoothly. When two people's day branches form this pair, it has the same name in compatibility readings, but that alone does not determine their connection.

Seowoon's free combinations · clashes reading counts every pair between the four pillars—Combination · Clash · Punishment · Destruction · Harm · Resentment—and shows Resentment as “a pair that feels uneasy for no clear reason”. The twelve symbolic star positions are covered separately in the free symbolic stars (sal, 煞) reading.

A common misconception

You may hear “Resentment Star = enemies” or “Couples with a Resentment Star will separate”, but the calculation only checks whether two branches form this pair. It does not determine good or bad fortune.Saju reads this only as a tendency for hard-to-explain distance to linger. When you feel uneasy without knowing why, the advice is to give each other some space before searching for a cause—not to end the relationship.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Resentment Star bad for compatibility?

When two people's day branches form a Resentment pair, it suggests some unease, but that alone does not determine compatibility. Saju simply reads it as a relationship where unexplained distance may linger rather than one marked by major clashes. Combinations, clashes, and the Ten Gods must be considered together.

Is the Resentment Star only checked between the day and month branches?

No. This pair can form between any two positions in the four pillars. Pairs involving the day branch are discussed most often because they include the partner seat. A month-day pair is read as distance between work and yourself.

Does having a Resentment Star mean a troubled marriage?

That is beyond what the calculation can tell you. Resentment means there is a pair where distance may linger; how you handle that distance is up to both of you. Neither general saju interpretation nor the calculation gives a definitive verdict on a relationship.
