Four Pillars Studies(命理學)

Four Pillars studies (myeongri, 命理學) is an East Asian discipline that converts your birth year·month·day·hour into eight stem-and-branch characters, then reads their Yin-Yang and Five Elements relationships to interpret your innate temperament and changing patterns of fortune.

When people say they are getting a saju reading, saju is what myeongri studies. Its modern framework places the Day Master at the center as you, then reads the other characters through the Ten Gods.

Traits

Myeongri has its roots in Yin-Yang and Five Elements philosophy and the stem-and-branch calendar. Li Xuzhong of the Tang dynasty organized readings around the year pillar. Xu Ziping (徐子平) of the Song dynasty later shifted the focus to the heavenly stem of the birth day, laying the foundation for modern myeongri. This is why it is also called “Japyeong studies”.

Frequently cited classics include the Song-era 『Yeonhae Japyeong』, the Ming-era 『Jeokcheonsu』 (attributed to Liu Bowen and widely read in later annotated editions) and 『Sammyeong Tonghoe』, the Qing-era 『Japyeong Jinjeon』 by Shen Xiaozhan, and 『Gungtong Bogam (Nangangmang)』, which addresses seasonal balance. 『Japyeong Jinjeon』 is a key reference for chart patterns, 『Jeokcheonsu』 for elemental flow and balancing strength, and 『Gungtong Bogam』 for seasonal balance.

There are five core tools — Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, the Ten Gods relative to the Day Master, chart patterns based on the month branch, favorable elements that balance the chart through support·seasonal adjustment·mediation, and ten-year periods and annual cycles. Symbolic stars·the 12 life stages·combinations and clashes provide additional context.

Myeongri is an interpretive framework for explaining innate tendencies and patterns over time, rather than a technique for predicting the future. Different schools and readers may reach different conclusions about the same chart. Seowoon distinguishes calculated values, such as the birth chart·Ten Gods·ten-year periods, from the general interpretations built on them.

A common misconception

A common misconception is that “myeongri treats destiny as fixed”. In this tradition, the same energy can show up differently depending on how you use it. People with the same saju can lead different lives through different circumstances and choices. Myeongri is closer to a map that helps inform those choices.
