The Gi-chuk (己丑) day pillar places the Day Master, Gi Earth (己), above the day branch, Chuk Earth (丑). The day branch's main hidden stem, Gi Earth (己), is Companion, sharing the Day Master's element and yin–yang polarity. Its twelve life stage is Tomb (Myo, 墓).
The image is of “field soil” layered over “frozen ground”. General interpretations describe someone with firm footing who feels comfortable living on their own terms but does not readily reveal what they hold inside.
What the calculation sets
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Day Master (you) | Gi (己) — Earth (土) · Yin |
| Day branch | Chuk (丑) — Earth (土) · Yin |
| Day branch Ten God (primary hidden stem) | Companion · Peer — someone who stands alongside you as an equal |
| Day branch hidden stems | Gi (己) Companion (main energy) · Gye (癸) Indirect Wealth · Sin (辛) Eating God |
| Twelve Life Stages | Tomb |
| Nayin Elements | Lightning Fire |
| Day-Based Void | O (午) · Mi (未) |
Stem-branch pairs · hidden stems · twelve life stages · elemental designation · Void come from lunar-typescript; Ten Gods are determined relative to the Day Master (ganzhi.ts).
Personality
Gi (己) is Yin Earth, the soil of a field. It is generally seen as a place that nurtures growth. Chuk (丑) is Yin Earth, the frozen ground of late winter, holding things within without releasing them yet. You and the ground beneath you share the same energy, giving you firm footing. This is also read as feeling more comfortable with your own approach than someone else's.
The day branch's Ten God is Companion, and its twelve life stage is Tomb (Myo, 墓). Chuk (丑) contains three characters: Gi (己), Companion; Gye (癸), Indirect Wealth; and Sin (辛), Eating God. Beneath an equal stand both money that moves in big waves and the ability to produce steadily. General interpretations therefore describe someone quiet on the outside who holds wealth and talent within. Tomb is a stage of gathering and storing, so what is held inside is described as being closed away in a storehouse.
These are the only values the calculation establishes. Personality descriptions are general interpretations, and the season represented by the month branch changes how quickly the ground thaws, even among people with the same Gi-chuk day pillar.
Work
Companion is the ability to build life on your own terms. General interpretations associate the Gi-chuk day pillar with agriculture·food·real estate·warehousing·accounting, work connected to land and storage, as well as self-employment where you take responsibility for your own share. Eating God among the hidden stems adds hands-on creation, while Indirect Wealth suggests turning that work into a larger business.
Field soil struggles most when it is expected only to yield a harvest, with nothing to nurture. Some interpretations favor work that involves a process of cultivation. In the month branch·hour pillar, we look for Officer to guide Companion and for visible Wealth to bring out what has been stored.
Love · Compatibility
Companion sits in the day branch, the partner seat. General interpretations suggest that close relationships last longer when both people stand side by side rather than one leaning on the other. Relationships are read as more comfortable when partners treat each other as equals and each takes responsibility for their own share.
Compatibility starts with the relationships of the day branch, Chuk (丑). Ja (子) forms a Ja–Chuk Six Harmony, while Mi (未) forms a head-on Chuk–Mi Clash. Sa (巳)·Yu (酉) join Chuk in a Sa–Yu–Chuk Three Harmony, bringing all three onto one side. Calculations establish these relationships; both people's full charts reveal their character.
Men and women
In traditional saju, Wealth represents a man's partner. For men with a Gi-chuk day pillar, the day branch's main hidden stem is Companion, but Gye (癸), Indirect Wealth, is also hidden within it. Some interpretations place the partner connection deep inside, like water beneath frozen ground. We also check whether Wealth is visible in the other pillars.
Officer represents a woman's partner. For women with a Gi-chuk day pillar, the day branch holds Companion rather than Officer, so energy equal to their own is read as the foundation that comes before a partner. We look for Officer in the other pillars and check whether abundant Companion energy shares that Officer influence. When gender is unknown, we retain both readings.
What this day pillar should watch
Earth layered over Earth is firm but slow to move. General interpretations advise people with a Gi-chuk day pillar to watch for insisting on their own methods so strongly that they cannot accept others' approaches, and missing the right time to share what they hold inside.
In the remaining characters, we look for Wood (Officer) to till the hardened ground, and check whether additional Earth creates more Peer energy that shares the wealth. Years and ten-year periods that bring Mi (未) form a Chuk–Mi Clash. The calculation establishes only that the Clash forms; it does not determine what will happen that year.

Frequently asked questions
Do women and men with a Gi-chuk day pillar have different traits?
The calculations are the same. Only the traditional partner rule differs: Officer for women and Wealth for men. Gi-chuk's day branch contains hidden Indirect Wealth but no Officer, so for men we look within the day branch, and for women we look at the other pillars.
Which day pillars are compatible with Gi-chuk?
We look at pairings with Chuk (丑), the day branch. Ja (子) forms a Six Harmony pairing, Sa (巳)·Yu (酉) join it in Three Harmony, and Mi (未) forms a Clash. Two day pillars alone do not determine compatibility. Seowoon reads both full charts to see which Ten Gods each person represents to the other.
What careers suit the Gi-chuk day pillar?
With Companion in the day branch and Eating God·Indirect Wealth among the hidden stems, traditional interpretations associate this pillar with land and storage, self-employment where you take responsibility for your own work, and hands-on cultivation. This varies with the month branch and hour pillar, so a day pillar alone does not determine a career.
